Skin Cancer Diagnoses, Treatment & Surgery

Early referral is essential for successful skin cancer outcomes.

Did you know that New Zealand has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world? The most common forms of skin cancer usually appear on areas of skin which have been overexposed to the sun. Risk factors for developing skin cancer are prolonged exposure to the sun, fair skin, and possibly over-exposure to UV light from sun beds.

There are three main types of skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma; if you suspect you have signs of these skin cancers developing, you can book a consultation with Associate Professor (Hon.) Richard Martin for thorough assessments, treatments and diagnosis. Mr Martin and his team are here to assist you towards smart planning and optimum outcomes.

Be proactive about changes in your skin; book a consultation today at a clinic across Auckland or visit Richard’s rooms in Takapuna.

Skin Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment & Surgery

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

The incidence of Basal Cell carcinoma in New Zealand is fairly common. These are found on skin surfaces that are exposed to the sun. While these do not spread, they can ulcerate and are sometimes mistaken for a scab.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

The head and neck are the most common area where you may find a SCC. Most are low risk, but some squamous cell carcinomas can metastasise to the lymph nodes and rarely more distantly sites on the body.

Melanoma

Usually beginning as a pigmented lesion on normal skin or a changing mole, this is the most serious form of skin cancer. While not always pigmented, amelanotic is rare, so a vigilant approach is highly recommended.
