Enlarged Lymph Nodes Diagnosis & Treatment
A general overview.
Enlarged lymph nodes can be the result of various conditions, from infections to immune system disorders and lymphoma. Here’s an overview of the diagnostic process you can expect when you consult with New Zealand-trained general surgeon, Associate Professor (Hon.) Richard Martin.
- Medical History: A discussion about your symptoms, recent infections, and overall health.
- Physical Examination: An examination of the enlarged lymph nodes to assess their size, tenderness, and texture.
- Blood Tests: These can help identify infections or other underlying conditions.
- Imaging: Ultrasound, CT scan, PET CT scan, or MRI may be used to better view the lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.
- Biopsy: If necessary, a fine needle aspiration (FNA) to take a sample from the lymph node for further examination under a microscope or the node may be removed surgically for definitive diagnosis.
Enlarged Lymph Nodes Treatment
Your treatment will depend on the underlying cause:
- Infections: Antibiotics or antiviral medications may be prescribed.
- Inflammatory Disorders: Anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids might be recommended.
- Cancer: Treatment could involve a lymphoma node excision or other surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or targeted therapies, depending on the type and stage of cancer.
- Monitoring: Sometimes, the patient might not need specific treatment but requires monitoring for changes.
It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnostic approach and treatment tailored to your specific situation.

Other General Surgery Procedures
Lumps & Bumps
Lumps and bumps can occur anywhere on the body. Most are diagnosed clinically, or with ultrasound or MRI and can be excised under local anaesthetic unless large or in complex sites.
Ingrown Toe Nails
Ingrown toenails can be painful and get infected. However, they are easily fixed under local anaesthetic, or you might opt for day-stay surgery for a more comfortable approach.
