When do you need Thyroid Surgery?
The thyroid gland in the neck makes up part of your endocrine system, it is responsible for producing hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and energy levels. Thyroids may develop complex disorders, which require complex treatment.
The most common presentation is a neck lump that develops in the thyroid gland. Some patients dealing with overactive thyroid disorders could experience symptoms like weight loss, heart palpitations, menstrual irregularities or tremors. Other patients develop pressure symptoms from large goitres.
When do you need a Thyroidectomy?
If medications or other non-surgical methods are unsuccessful, thyroid surgery may be performed to address the unique and specific conditions related to the patient. Thyroid disorders that may require surgical intervention include benign thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and overactive thyroid nodules.
Because thyroid disorders vary from person to person, each case requires thorough assessment and diagnosis to determine if surgical intervention is required. Hemithyroidectomy involves an intricate surgical procedure where one lobe of the thyroid is removed, or total thyroidectomy, where all thyroid glands are removed from the neck. NIM (Nerve Integrity Monitoring) is commonly used during thyroid surgery to protect the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is crucial for voice functioning.
