Parathyroidectomy - Parathyroid Surgery
When do you need Parathyroid Surgery?
Parathyroid glands are located in the neck, behind the thyroid gland, and are responsible for producing the parathyroid hormone (PTH), which supports healthy functioning levels of calcium in the blood and bones.Â

A Parathyroidectomy is an effective surgical treatment to treat hyperparathyroidism, a unique condition where one or several parathyroid glands are too overactive, resulting in higher levels of the PTH hormone. High PTH causes increased levels of calcium in the blood, known as hypercalcemia, can lead to various symptoms and complications. Depending on the unique presentation, a Parathyroidectomy may be required to treat either primary, secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism.Â

Parathyroid glands can become enlarged (primary hyperparathyroidism) due to a benign tumour, which increases blood calcium levels and can cause fatigue, kidney stones or bone pain. A Parathyroidectomy is a highly intricate surgery that involves removing one or more parathyroid glands. In some cases, all glands are affected, which can call for a full removal. Richard will discuss the appropriate procedure on a case-by-case basis.Â
