Different Types of Cysts

Cysts can present internally or externally. Treatment varies depending on the type and location of the cyst, ranging from watchful waiting to surgical removal. Here are a few that commonly occur.

  • Epidermoid cyst: These are external cysts which are filled with keratin, also known as sebaceous cysts..
  • Sebaceous: Also known as epidermoid cysts, these common external cysts contain a yellowish, oily material called sebum and are like large blackheads.
  • Ganglions: These are noncancerous lumps that most commonly develop along the tendons or joints of wrists or hands, filled with a thick, sticky fluid.
  • Dermoids: These are congenital cysts that develop from embryonic cells; they may contain tissues such as hair, skin, or teeth.

Skin Cancer & Melanoma Treatments

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

These are found on skin surfaces that are exposed to the sun. While these do not spread, they can ulcerate and are sometimes mistaken for a scab.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

A proactive approach is recommended as squamous cell carcinomas can also metastasise to other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes.

Melanoma

Often beginning as a pigmented lesion on normal skin or a changing mole, this is a form of skin cancer. A vigilant approach to checks is recommended.
