Associate Professor (Hon.) Richard Martin is New Zealand’s leading Melanoma Surgical Oncologist, treating all forms of melanoma nationwide and internationally. He manages over 1000 melanoma and skin cancer cases each year, chairs Auckland Regional Melanoma Multidisciplinary meeting and sits on the executive committees of MELNET, Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials Group (MASC) and Melanoma New Zealand charity.
SYDNEY CANCER CENTRE
Richard is a New Zealand-trained General Surgeon who spent two and a half years at the Sydney Cancer Center, specialising in melanoma and head/neck/thyroid/parathyroid surgery. Most of his time was spent at the Sydney Melanoma Unit (now Melanoma Institute of Australia), the world’s largest treatment and research facility for melanoma.
While in Sydney, he completed a Master of Surgery in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sydney. As a Surgical Oncologist, Richard assesses and treats all forms of melanoma, skin and head/neck cancer. Richard publishes in numerous academic journals (45 plus), is a regular presenter at national and international conferences and is actively involved in research and clinical trials. He is also an Associate Professor (Honorary) at the University of Auckland.
LOCATIONS
Richard performs General Surgery procedures (e.g. hernias, gallbladders, lymph node biopsies, ingrown toenails) and Endocrine Surgery (thyroid, parathyroid). He works in the multidisciplinary Melanoma Specialists team and for the Health New Zealand-Waitemata (North Shore and Waitakere). Private patients are seen at The Specialists Takapuna, Warkworth Medical Centre, Peninsula Medical Centre and Skinsafe in Orewa.

This current role is a new challenge for me, and I’ve embraced it with energy and passion.
I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Richard for the past 17 years and I am constantly inspired by his exceptional care and support for his patients.
